The Supplement that Grows in a British Field
One of the most robust and well-researched fields in nutrition is the field of omega-3 health. As the research around omega-3 health continues to emerge, so too does our appetite for a daily omega-3 supplement.
There is robust evidence supporting the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids for brain health, including cognitive function, mood and learning, as well as cardiovascular and heart health, lowering triglycerides and exerting an anti-inflammatory effect.
To date, much of the research has focused on marine sources of omega-3 fatty acids, predominantly fish oils, with the global fish oil production in 2022 standing at 1.25 million metric tons. Whilst fish oils are effective, they are unsustainable and often the quality is of vastly varying levels, with major producers being Vietnam, Chile, Norway and Peru. Anchovies, sardines, herring and other smaller fish species are the main source of fish oil.
The need for alternative sources of omega-3 fatty acids has never been greater, with demand for fish oil increasing year on year.
A Sustainable Solution
When seeking the solution to a fish-oil alternative, finding an omega-rich oil that is as sustainable as possible is key to supporting and benefiting human health and planetary health. But does such a solution exist? Step forward the British superhero crop, Ahiflower. Grown by British Regenerative Farmers, Ahiflower is a crop native to the UK with a very unique fatty acid profile. Plant-based alternatives for fish oil have mostly been shunned by nutritionists and food scientists for their inefficiency in converting to the ‘intelligent fats’ EPA and DHA found in fish oils. This inefficient conversion is due to the poor conversion of ALA to the intermediary fat SDA, which then converts into EPA and DHA.
This rate-limiting step acknowledges the differences in fish oil and hemp oil. However, the fatty acid profile of Ahiflower, naturally rich in SDA, means the rate-limiting step of converting ALA to SDA is bypassed, allowing Ahiflower to be comparable to fish oil in its benefits. This British-grown crop is more like a fish oil from the soil than your typical plant-based oil and is nature’s richest source of omegas.
A Big Win for British Farmers
This is great news for British Regenerative Farmers! One acre of Ahiflower crop produces as much omega-rich oil as 500,000 anchovies… that is a lot of anchovies! The UK are global leaders in this new category of omega supplementation, with the brand Regenerative Omegas having launched in the UK in 2023. Regenerative Omegas are made with sustainably sourced Ahiflower oil, and won an number of awards since launching including, Best Supplement 2025 at the Natural Trade Health Summit 2025, Nourish Award 2025 three star Silver Award and Highly Commended Award 2026 Menopause Awards.
A Changing Tide
This is a big win for British Farmers but also a win for planetary health, for our oceans and their precious ecosystems.
